Meeting # 10: Archival Reference
Thursday, October 16, 4-5 pm
SML Room 409
Discussion Leader: Eva Guggemos
Wendy Duff and Allyson Fox:
“‘You're a guide rather than an expert’: Archival reference from an archivist's point of view,” Journal of the Society of Archivists 27, no. 2 (2006): 129-153, http://www.informaworld.com/10.1080/00379810601075943
Among the points for possible discussion:
- Some of the archivists in the study thought that users should be better prepared before coming into the archives -- they should have read the secondary literature on their topic, for example. How much preparation do (or should) we assume on the part of our patrons? How might these assumptions be affecting archival description?
- The authors state that archivists should provide "a remote reference service that not only answers reference questions but also helps to educate remote users." (p. 139) How might this work in practice?
...and more.
